Command 01

SIT

“Sit” means your dog should sit either in front of me or at my side, depending on the context. I will teach your dog to sit politely when greeting people, and also to sit in front of the door before we walk through it together. During walks, when we come to a stop, I will train your dog to sit on my left side, aligned with my left heel, building good leash manners and calm behavior.

Command 02

STAY

“Stay” is one of the most important commands your dog will learn. It teaches impulse control and establishes trust in your leadership. Whether you’re bringing in groceries, answering the door, or picking up waste, your dog should remain in place until released. A reliable “Stay” prevents pulling, bolting, or crowding and helps create a calm, well-mannered companion in everyday situations.

Command 03

DOWN

“Down” is a foundational obedience command that every dog should understand. It teaches self-control, respect for boundaries, and calm behavior. A well-trained dog can remain in a down position, calmly chewing a bone or relaxing, even while you’re entertaining guests or having a conversation. This command helps your dog learn to settle and stay out of the way when needed, creating a more peaceful home environment.

Command 04

COME

“Come” is one of the most important—and often most challenging—commands for a dog to master. A reliable recall is essential for your dog’s safety, whether you’re inside your home or out at a busy park. You want your dog to respond immediately when called, no matter the distractions. Through our training, combined with consistent reinforcement from your family, we will teach your puppy that coming when called is not optional – it’s expected every time.

Command 05

HEEL

All dogs are trained to walk in the heel position on your left side. The ideal placement is with your dog’s right shoulder aligned with your left heel. Basic obedience begins with proper leash manners—your dog should not be pulling or leading the walk. From the moment your dog begins training with me to the moment they go home, they are consistently reinforced to walk in this correct position.

And…

Socialization

At Word of Mouth Dog Training, we believe true socialization goes beyond simple playtime—it is the foundation of a confident, well-mannered dog. To maintain a balanced pack, we do not tolerate rough play behaviors such as face-biting, ear-tugging, resource guarding over toys or water, wildlife chasing, or reactive growling. Instead, we guide dogs toward harmonious play and calm coexistence.

Core Commands and Basic Obedience Skills

Basic Obedience training is the foundation of every well-behaved dog, and at Word of Mouth Dog Training, it’s at the heart of everything we do. Whether your dog is learning basic commands for the first time or needs a refresher on the fundamentals, our obedience training curriculum is designed to deliver reliable, real-world results.

We focus on the five essential commands every dog should know: COME, SIT, STAY, HEEL, and DOWN. These core commands give you the ability to safely manage your dog in any environment… whether you’re at home, on a trail, or in a busy public space. More importantly, they build a foundation of communication and trust between you and your dog.

Obedience training isn’t just about compliance – it’s about creating a calmer, happier dog that feels confident and understood. Once a dog knows what’s expected, anxiety decreases, excitement becomes manageable, and the relationship between owner and canine improves dramatically.

Your dog will work through several levels while they learn and advance through these 5 basic obedience commands. During our group classes, you will learn hands on how to use these commands to ensure your dog carryover’s his new skills in every environment.

At the end of your dog’s board-in training, we guarantee they will understand and obey these 5 commands.

After those four classes, you’re welcome to attend an unlimited number of group classes for the rest of your dog’s life. This lifelong support helps keep your dog’s training consistent and gives you the skills and confidence to continue working with them for years to come.
