frequently asked questions

Common questions & answers

How long does In-Home Dog Training take?

The duration of dog training sessions is usually 60-90 minutes. For some dogs, noticeable progress may occur after just one training session, especially if the behaviors are minor. More complex issues, like aggression or separation anxiety, may require a longer commitment.

In-home dog training is ideal for addressing a wide range of behavioral issues, particularly those that occur in the home environment. Common issues include excessive barking, leash pulling, leash reactivity, aggression, separation anxiety, and destructive behaviors like chewing or digging. Training at home allows us to observe your dog in real-time, making it easier to identify triggers and develop targeted solutions that work in the context of daily life.

You don’t need to worry about purchasing special equipment beforehand. Our Denver dog trainers come prepared with the necessary tools, such as leashes, collars, and other training aids that are suited to your dog’s needs. During your first training session, the trainer will assess your dog and, if needed, recommend any additional equipment that could help with the training. For example, certain training collars may be suggested to improve leash walking or address specific behavioral issues. We will guide you in selecting the right tools to continue training at home.

Absolutely! In-home training is a collaborative process. Not only does the dog trainer work directly with your dog, but you’ll also be actively involved. The goal is to equip you with the knowledge and techniques necessary to continue reinforcing positive behaviors once the training session is over. You’ll learn how to implement consistent routines, handle behavioral challenges, and use the right commands to communicate with your dog. By the end of the training, you will feel confident in managing your dog’s behavior and maintaining progress without ongoing assistance.

In-home dog training works for dogs of all ages, breeds, and temperaments. Whether your dog is a puppy learning basic obedience or an adult dog with behavioral challenges, in-home training can be effective. The key is understanding your dog’s unique personality and adjusting techniques accordingly. For instance, puppies may require foundational training, while older dogs may need more advanced behavior modification. Jose will provide home exercises and strategies to begin implementing, which are crucial for your dog’s progress. Board-in training or Group Classes may also be recommended based on your dog’s needs.

The frequency of sessions will depend on the behaviors we’re addressing and how quickly your dog progresses. For some issues, weekly lessons are ideal, while others may benefit from more spaced-out visits. Jose believes dog’s behaviors can be fixed after one educational session and training demonstration. We’ll provide a recommended plan for ongoing sessions if needed to maximize your dog’s success.

Once the training is complete, you’ll be well-equipped to continue managing your dog’s behavior on your own. You’ll have learned techniques to address specific challenges and maintain progress. Some owners may choose to schedule follow-up lessons to reinforce training or address new behaviors as they arise. We also provide guidance on how to handle future challenges, keeping your dog on track for a happy, well-behaved relationship. Jose will also provide an assessment of your dog’s abilities and may recommend group classes or board-in training program at the Word of Mouth Dog Training facility.
